“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming”
It’s right at the core of a recent subject of quiet time I had the other day: perseverance.
“Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Part of the commentary that goes with this verse: The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace with God, not the end of labor. A relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome toil into spiritual productivity and purpose. (NIV, Life Application Study Bible)
This really resonated with me, I’m a runner. I always want to escape circumstances when in fact where I’m at is exactly where God wants me to be. Just like Jonah, I should stop resisting so I can be productive.
“To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you bought my life up from the pit, O Lord my God…But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the lord. And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.” Jonah 2:6, 9-10
Commentary: Our troubles should cause us to cling tightly to God, not attempt to bargain our way out of the pain. It took a miracle of deliverance to get Jonah to do as God had commanded. When you know God wants you to do something, don’t run. God may not stop you as he did Jonah. (NIV, Life Application Study Bible)
We hear constantly that God is more about the process than the end product. So keep your head up (as I’m trying to do) and let’s keep working towards our goals and the visions God has for each of our lives. He’s already “there.” “There” is also one of God’s many names.
“You discern my going out and my laying down; your are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:3-5
The God of the entire universe is on our side and in our corner, what do we have to fear?? That’s right nothing and no one, so go out into the world and be great!!
