Right now I’m in a season of fighting, and you may be too. The fights I’m facing are emotional and spiritual. Emotionally I’m fighting the usual sentiments associated with a breakup: doubt, fear, loneliness. Something that helps in the fight is guarding my heart; that means no songs that would put me in my feelings, no looking through old pictures, only moving forward. “Guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life…let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.” (Proverbs 4: 23; 25) And in the midst of the fight, I’m trusting God’s timing and plans. “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O Lord, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands.” (Psalm 138:8) Another fight is putting in the daily work toward a bigger dream or goal. It is easy to get discouraged in the toil of the day to day and ask God when is my breakthrough? But God is developing us in the day to day. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1: 2-4) So let us not give up the race when we’re so close to the finish line! “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12: 1-3
